OneWeb launches 36 more satellites for its internet network

Recommended for Secondary Grades

We read about the British company OneWeb earlier. Similar to Starlink, OneWeb aims to deliver broadband internet connections from space using satellites. It aims to launch a total of about 650 satellites for its network services in the first phase.

Recently, it launched its sixth batch of satellites. It consisted of 36 satellites. They were launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia. That takes its total number of satellites to 182 (for now).

It plans to launch two more batches by this year. Then it will start services for Britain, Northern Europe, Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Arctic Seas.

Apart from that, OneWeb has also launched an “innovation challenge“. This challenge aims to find new technologies and applications for future spacecraft. OneWeb is encouraging people to submit their ideas and they will pick winners to work with them.

As more companies launch satellites, experts are concerned that they will change the nature of the space environment. Some are even wondering if there is enough space for all these satellites.

The European Union and China are also planning to set up internet satellite networks of their own.
