Photographer captures “jellyfish ballet” in lake

Jellyfish ballet
Photography is not just about taking beautiful photos; sometimes it’s about being clever.
A photographer named Angel Fitor snapped the photo above, titled “Medusa Ballet” at Mar Menor, Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon. “Medusa” is the free-floating, second stage of a jellyfish’s life cycle.
What is a lagoon?
A lagoon is a body of water separated from larger bodies of water by a natural barrier (such as a coral reef)..
In the photo, you can see around a dozen “dancing” jellyfish in the lagoon. This photo was the top winner at the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021 competition.
However, there’s a twist: There are only two jellyfish in the photo! If you look closely, all the jellyfish look alike. But it is not copy-pasted. Instead, Fitor used a photography technique to capture them moving across the water. Fitor said that he has been trying this technique for six years but kept failing until now.
The photo
The jellyfish in the photo is a type called the Mediterranean jellyfish. It is also known as fried egg jellyfish, for its similarity to the way a fried egg looks.
This photo was taken in 2014. However, sadly, after this, a large part of the sea life has died in Mar Menor. Environmentalists say that it is due to pollution.
