Mysterious blood-red jellyfish may be a rare, new species

Researchers with the US agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) may have discovered a previously unknown jellyfish.

They found it very deep underwater in the Atlantic Ocean at almost 2,300 feet.

The jellyfish looks like a floating beret hat fringed with thin tassels. It has a blood-red body and appears to belong to a jellyfish family called Poralia. Only one other Poralia species has been discovered so far. It is called Poralia rufescens, and has a bell-shaped body, 30 tentacles and lives in deep water across the world’s oceans.

Scientists spotted the as-yet-unnamed jellyfish on 28 July near Rhode Island, US. An underwater robot called Deep Discoverer spotted it.

What did the scientists spot earlier?

These are the same scientists who also recently spotted a yellow sea sponge lounging alongside a pink sea star, a “real-life SpongeBob and Patrick”.
