Prarambh – India’s private sector rocket launches!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

India’s first private rocket launch is almost ready to take off for the first time. The name of the rocket is “Vikram-S.” It is made by an Indian space startup Skyroot, which is based in Hyderabad.

The name of the mission in which Vikram-S will send three customer satellites on a suborbital flight is “Prarambh.”

This mission will be the first time a private company has done a launch. From Sriharikota, the launch will happen between November 12 and 16.

What is payload?

The weight of what a vehicle is carrying, minus what it needs to run.

Key facts!

  • The Vikram-S rocket is a single-stage sub-orbital launch vehicle that will carry three customer payloads.
  • In addition, it will also help test and confirm technologies in the Vikram series of space launch vehicles.
  • Sub-orbital flights are usually done by vehicles that are moving slower than the orbital velocity.
  • Thus the vehicle is moving fast enough to get to space, but not fast enough to stay in orbit around the Earth.
  • Skyroot is making three different types of Vikram rockets right now.
  • Furthermore, these rockets will send payloads into orbits with a total mass of between 290 kg and 560 kg.
  • They will do this by using a variety of solid and cryogenic fuels.
  • “Prarambh” will be a tribute to India’s private space industry, which has grown a lot thanks to reforms and the government’s vision.
