The DMK has chosen R Priya to be their candidate for mayor of the city of Chennai. She will be the first Dalit woman and the youngest woman to hold this job.

What is DMK?

Tamil Nadu and the state of Puducherry are home to a social-democratic political party called the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, or DMK.

What is Social Democracy?

Social democracy is an ideology that tries to get to socialism gradually over time in a peaceful manner.

What is Socialism?

A belief that all people are equal and that money and property should be equally divided.

Youngest woman

She will also be the first Dalit and the youngest woman to be Mayor of the city (located in North of Chennai). She is also the third woman in the history of the city of Chennai to hold this job. Tara Cherian and Kamakshi Jayaraman were the first two women to hold this position.

Key Role of a Mayor in India

A mayor is in charge of the city council. He or she has a lot of different jobs, both lawmaking and operational.

Challenges

Many neighbourhoods lack basic infrastructures, like drinking water, electricity, transportation, and sanitation. As a councillor, this is Priya’s first job. She has been a party member since she was 18.

During last year’s Assembly elections, the DMK came back to power in the state. Priya says that this sparked her interest in politics and her desire to help her neighbourhood.  She believes there are a lot of problems that need to be addressed. For example, not enough water, roads need to be made better, problems with electricity.

The neighbourhood also wishes to use an open area of public land as a playground for the kids. They are hopeful Priya will help them in this task.
