Smoke-Free Sweden Inspires Healthier Future for Kids!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Hey there! Did you know that Sweden is on the way to becoming the first “smoke-free” country in Europe? This means that fewer and fewer people in Sweden are smoking cigarettes every day. Isn’t that amazing?

Experts believe that this great achievement is the result of many years of campaigns and laws against smoking. They also mention that a product called “snus,” which is a type of tobacco that you put under your lip, might have played a role in helping people quit smoking.

Important Details

  • In Sweden, only 6.4% of people over 15 years old were smoking daily in 2019. That’s much lower than the average in other European countries, which is 18.5%. And the numbers have continued to decrease since then, reaching 5.6% last year. It seems like Swedes really care about living a healthy life!
  • One person named Carina Astorsson from Stockholm said she doesn’t smoke because she doesn’t like the smell and wants to take care of her body. Many Swedes, especially younger generations, understand the dangers of smoking and have chosen not to start.
  • While Sweden has made incredible progress, they still have a little way to go, especially in some groups of people who face challenges. But overall, it’s becoming rarer and rarer to see people smoking in Sweden. In fact, smoking is not allowed in many public places, like bus stops, train platforms, and even outside hospitals.
  • Interestingly, instead of smoking, some people use snus, which is a form of tobacco that you put under your lip. But even though some say it’s less harmful than smoking, health experts still caution that it’s not entirely safe.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has praised Sweden for its efforts in reducing smoking rates. They believe that Sweden’s success comes from a combination of things like spreading information about the dangers of smoking, banning advertisements for tobacco, and offering support to those who want to quit.
  • It’s important to remember that smoking is an addiction and can be harmful to your health. The best thing you can do is to stay away from cigarettes and encourage others to do the same. By choosing a healthy lifestyle, you’ll be taking care of your body just like Carina Astorsson and many other Swedes.
  • So, dear friends, let’s celebrate Sweden’s progress in becoming a smoke-free country and remember that taking care of our bodies is always a great choice. Stay healthy and enjoy the fresh air of a smoke-free world!
