SpaceX announces its first-ever all-civilian space flight crew

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

We read about SpaceX taking NASA astronauts to space last year. SpaceX is the first private company to transport NASA astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

Now, a crew of entirely civilian space travellers will also make the trip to space onboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.  ‘Civilian’ here means astronauts who do not belong to any country’s space agency.

A businessman named Jared Isaacman is paying for the multimillion-dollar trip. He will also be in charge of the mission.

The mission

It is called the Inspiration4 mission. There will be four people on this trip to space including Isaacman.

Isaacman is donating the other seats. One of the seats is for a woman and the other for a healthcare worker “committed to helping kids beat cancer”.

The fourth seat is reserved for the winner of a contest. This contest is for customers of Isaacman’s eCommerce platform, Shift4Shop.

SpaceX will train Isaacman and his fellow crew members for the mission at SpaceX facilities. It is planned to happen around the end of this year.
