NASA and SpaceX launched first operational mission to space

Recommended for Middle Grades

. NASA and SpaceX together are working on space technology. We know on the 30th May 2020, SpaceX launched two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station(ISS). This was the first mission from US soil since 2011.

This test mission called Demo-2 was a great success. It was the first human spaceflight launch by a private company (SpaceX). Since it was successful, from now on, SpaceX will take NASA and other astronauts to ISS.

The first proper SpaceX mission with four astronauts was launched on Monday. They have arrived safely at the ISS.

The Crew Dragon capsule that took them was named “Resilience”. It has become the first spacecraft to be certified by NASA since the Space Shuttle nearly 40 years ago. It was launched on a reusable SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The crew is comprised of three Americans – Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover and Shannon Walker as well as Japan’s Soichi Noguchi.

The crew joins two Russians and one American aboard the station and will stay for six months.

Glover is the first Black astronaut to stay at the ISS for a full six months. Noguchi is the first non-American to fly to orbit on a private spaceship.

NASA and SpaceX hope that this will be the first of many such missions. SpaceX is scheduled to launch two more flights with astronauts for NASA in 2021.
