The Festival of Halloween!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Oh, what fun! The day for ‘trick-or-treat’ is here again! The Festival of Halloween is here!

The festival of Halloween or All Hallow’s Eve is a celebration observed in many countries across the world, on 31 October every year.

Key facts!

  • It originated with the ancient festival of Samhain (Summer’s end).
  • People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts on this day.
  • It is the evening before All Saints’ Day on 1 November and All Souls’ Day on 2 November.
  • Children celebrate the day by going trick-or-treating at night.
  • They go from door to door saying ‘trick or treat?’
  • The person at the door usually gives them candies.
  • Other Halloween activities include costume parties, parades, bonfires, carving jack-o-lanterns from pumpkins etc.
  • The custom of trick or treating on the festival of Halloween may come from the belief that supernatural beings or souls of the dead who are roaming the earth at this time need to be appeased.
