Indian Railways to commence Tilting Trains!

Recommended for India

Indian Railway Authorities hope that the first tilting trains will start running in India in the year 2025. Tilting trains will be able to go faster around corners without negatively affecting passengers. This is because the trains will be able to tilt or lean.

The main idea behind tilting trains is to roll the vehicle body inwards as the train goes around a curve. So that passengers don’t feel the sideways acceleration. A new technology that tilts the track will make it easy for trains to go around curves without having to slow down.

In the next few years, as many as 100 Vande Bharat trains will be made. And each one will have this technology built in.

The goal is to speed up how quickly these trains move.

What is cetrifugal force?

Centrifugal force is the force that makes an object move away from its centre of rotation.

Key facts!

  • When a train speeds up around a curve, the centrifugal force pushes things and people inside the train out in all directions.
  • With this technology, trains can go faster when going around curves on standard tracks, just like motorcycles can do on winding roads.
  • For high-speed trains to run without being uncomfortable, the tracks have to be either completely straight or have very large curves.
  • Also, high-speed trains have to slow down when going around curves with less bank so that passengers don’t feel uncomfortable or the train doesn’t get out of control.
  • The tilt effect could make the luggage in the compartment slide.
  • It could also make people sitting down feel like they’re being squished.
  • And those who are standing lose their balance.
  • There are a number of ways the technology uses to bring the system back into balance and cancel out the effect of the tilt force.
  • Russia, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, China, and a few other countries are running tilting trains.
