Wenger says offside: Football frowns!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Hey there! Today we’re going to talk about a new rule in football. It’s all about being offside, but don’t worry, we’ll explain it in a way that’s really easy and simple to understand!

Simplified Excitement: New Offside Rule

  • So, this new offside rule is being proposed by a famous guy named Arsene Wenger. He used to be the manager of Arsenal, but now he works for FIFA, which is like the boss of all football. They want to try out this rule in Sweden and Italy first before using it everywhere.
  • The old rule says that a player is offside if any part of their body is closer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last defender (not the goalkeeper). But Arsene Wenger’s new rule is different. According to him, a player would only be offside if their whole body is ahead of the last defender’s line.
  • Now, why do they want to change the rule? Well, a few years ago, they introduced something called Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to help the referees make better decisions. But sometimes, it caused a lot of confusion. There was a famous goal by Roberto Firmino where his arm was offside, but the rest of him was onside. People even called it an “armpit offside.” It was really silly!
  • Then, in the World Cup, they tried using fancy technology to decide offside, but it still wasn’t perfect. Sometimes, they said a player was offside when they really weren’t. Like, this guy Lautaro Martinez had his goal taken away because they thought his shoulder and armpit were offside. But if you looked closely, they were actually onside. It was a big mess!
  • So, now they want to make the rule simpler and more fun. The new rule will let players be a little bit offside as long as they have a body part that can score a goal in line with the defender. It means more goals and more excitement!
  • Arsene Wenger is really excited about this idea, and even the big boss of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, likes it too. They want football to be more attacking and have lots of goals. That’s why they’re trying out this new rule in Italy and Sweden first. If it goes well, they’ll use it in other leagues too!
  • So, there you have it, football fan! The offside rule is changing, and it might make the game even more fun. Now you can go impress your friends with your knowledge of football’s silly new rule. Keep kicking and have a blast on the field!
