World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 3 May every year. This day celebrates the principles of freedom of the press. It also aims at raising awareness about the independence of the media.

Press or Media is the source from which we get updates of NEWS happening around the world. They include magazines, newspapers, the Internet, TV, radio, etc.

Important Details

  • World Press Day was announced by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993.
  • It is the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration. Windhoek Declaration is a statement of press freedom principles by African newspaper journalists presented at the UNESCO seminar in 1991.
  • UNESCO presents the prize ‘UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize’ on this day.
  • This prize is awarded to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of freedom of the press.
  • This year, Maria Ressa, a journalist from the Philippines has won the award.
  • This year’s theme is “Information as a Public Good”. It emphasises the importance of cherishing information as a public good.
  • It also looks at what can be done in the production, distribution and reception of content to strengthen journalism.
