Nikolay Gumilyov: Russian Poet

The month of April is known as National Poetry Writing Month or NaPoWriMo. As we celebrate NaPoWriMo, let’s celebrate a poet each day, and understand their way of writing poetry.

Nikolay Gumilyov was a famous poet in Russia before the revolution of 1917. He was born in 1886 in Kronstadt, Russia. Gumilyov studied in Paris and St. Petersburg but did not finish college. He met Anna Andreyevna Gorenko, who became a famous poet under the name Anna Akhmatova and married her in 1910.

Legacy of Gumilyov

Gumilyov published his first book of poetry, “The Path of the Conquistadors,” when he was a teenager. Critics did not like it very much, but his later books, such as “Romantic Flowers” and “Pearls,” were better. Gumilyov was interested in poetics, which is the theory of poetry. He helped to start a new literary movement called Acmeism with fellow poet Sergey Gorodetsky.

Gumilyov fought in World War I and received two medals for bravery. After the revolution, Gumilyov worked as a lecturer and wrote more poetry collections, including “The Bonfire.” Gumilyov’s works were forgotten for many years after his death, but they were published again in the mid-1980s in the Soviet Union.

Gumilyov was an important poet who created new and exciting poetry with exotic and daring imagery.
