From the Cholas to Nehru: ‘Sengol’ Tells Its Story!

Once upon a time in 1947, India said, "Bye-bye" to the British and became independent! But they had a question: How can we show that the power is now in the hands of the Indian people? That's when Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, asked for advice from a super wise guy named C. Rajagopalachari, or Rajaji for short.
Now, Rajaji had a brainwave! He looked at the Cholas, an ancient group from Tamil Nadu, and found something super interesting. When the Cholas passed on their power, they had a fancy ceremony. They used a special stick called the 'sengol' to hand over authority to the next ruler. Pretty fancy, right?
To make this happen, they needed a genius jeweler. So, they called Vummidi Bangaru Chetty! With his magic skills, he created a dazzling golden stick that was like a piece of art. Wowzers! And guess who helped him? It was Vummidi Ethirajulu and Vummidi Sudhakar, two talented folks from Chennai. They put their heart and soul into making the sengol.
Here comes the best part! Right before Independence Day, there was a big, grand ceremony. People from the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam, a special place in Tamil Nadu, flew all the way to the capital. And guess what they brought with them? You got it! The sengol!
They were super ready to give it to Jawaharlal Nehru. The ceremony was like stepping into a magical fairy tale! They followed all the traditions from Tamil Nadu. It was a sight to behold! Prime Minister Narendra Modi will install the 'Sengol' in the new Parliament building. It's going to happen on May 28, 2023, and Home Minister Amit Shah shared this amazing announcement. He's proud and thinks it's super important to keep this symbol of our country's history safe.
But wait, there's more! The sengol will be installed, and all 20 presidents of the Adheenams will be there too. That includes the 96-year-old Vummidi Bangaru Chetty. It's a special time to see a sacred ritual and get blessings from these important leaders.
