Book Review: ‘The War that Saved My Life’, By Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
The War that Saved My Life, written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, is a children’s 2015 novel published by Dial Books for Young Readers. It became a Newbery Honour Book in 2016 and was the author’s first book to get that award.
The War that Saved My Life is a work of Historical Fiction, and it was set during the time of World War Two. It is about two children: Ada and Jamie, who are stuck with their abusive mother, Mam. Mam lets Jamie do anything, but she disliked Ada very much. It was because Ada had a clubfoot which embarrassed Mam. Instead of being empathetic towards her, Mam abused Ada, physically and emotionally, and almost made her a servant.
Most of the people said London was going to be bombed, and everyone was frightened. So, both the children (Ada and Jamie) decided to help each other to escape Mam, and the catastrophic event that was going to happen, by going to live with someone unknown in someplace else that would help them live freely and not how they used to before.
This is the first book that I have read which is by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, and I have liked it very much. I love how the author has given a glimpse of history in the story, which tells me a bit about the events that took place in the past. I also got inspired by Ada’s courage to walk on the streets independently even with a disability that she suffered from. This story reminds me of a memory when I, being just 3 years old, took the escalators all by myself. Use of onomatopoeias at different points brought life to the story. The only thing that did not go well in my favour was lack of illustrations. I think, based on the points I have stated above, this book deserves to be given 4.5 out of 5 stars.
