13-year-old scientist designs travel solution that can rival Hyperloop

13-year-old Caroline Crouchley from New York, US has come up with a transport solution that might be better than Hyperloop.

  • A lot of companies, including Elon Musk’s Tesla are working on the next breakthrough concept for fast travel.
  • However, Caroline’s solution looks economically more viable, as well as eco-friendly.
  • The 8th-grade student from New York presented her idea at the annual 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
  • The idea is to build pneumatic tubes (controlled by air under pressure) next to existing train tracks.
  • Magnetic shuttles would travel through these vacuum tubes, connected via a magnetic arm to trains travelling on the existing tracks.

  • This system would utilize the current train tracks, and people would travel in the existing trains itself.
  • Though the speed of the trains would be vastly increased, it wouldn’t be as fast as the Hyperloop being proposed by Mr Musk.

However, the design’s low infrastructure costs and removal of the potential safety risk posed by propelling passengers in a vacuum(hyperloop’s vision) makes Caroline’s idea worth considering.

In India, the Maharashtra government has given its approval for constructing a Hyperloop between Mumbai and Pune, which will reduce the 3.5-hour distance (200 kilometres) to just 35 minutes.
