The All England Badminton Championships 2023 started on March 14th in Birmingham, England. The tournament is one of four Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 1000 events. 

It is being held at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham and features players from all over the world. The All England Badminton Championships is one of the most important badminton events.

Summary!

  • Firstly, Viktor Axelsen, the reigning men’s world and Olympic champion, won his first match at the 2023 Championships after losing the first game.
    • Loh Kean Yew, the 2021 champion, and Chou Tien-Chen, the fifth seed, lost on the opening day of the tournament.
  • Secondly, Ratchanok Intanon, the 2013 world champion, won her opening game in the women’s singles.
    • Chen Yufei, the 2019 All-England champion, also secured victory in her opening game.
  • Thirdly, Two-time champion Okuhara Nozomi lost to Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong.
  • Importantly, the tournament has a new concept tournament for 2023 called the Pacific U15 Team Challenge.
    • As a result, six junior (Under-15) teams from Pacific-based Member Associations will compete in the tournament.

Team India Highlights!

  • Indian shuttler PV Sindhu won her opening match against Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong in the women’s singles.
  • Kidambi Srikanth lost his opening match in the men’s singles category.
  • Further, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa, a mixed doubles team from India, were eliminated in the first round.
  • Sikki Reddy, a women’s doubles player, was knocked out in the first round along with her partner.
  • On the contrary, India’s Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy made a winning start in the men’s doubles category.
