P.V. Sindhu is first Indian to win gold at Badminton World Championships

P.V. Sindhu today became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships.

Key facts!

  • She beat Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara to win the title.
  • Ms Sindhu won 21-7 21-7 in the final match that lasted just 38 minutes.
  • This is Ms Sindhu’s fifth World Championships medal (she has won two silvers and two bronze medals previously).
  • Ms Sindhu also won an Olympic silver medal in the 2016 Rio Games and a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
  • Apart from P.V. Sindhu, B. Sai Praneeth also won the bronze medal in the men’s singles category at this year’s BWF World Championships.

B. Sai Praneeth

  • He is only the second Indian male player to win a medal at the BWF World Championships.
  • Prakash Padukone was the first, winning bronze in 1983.

What is the BWF World Championships (World Badminton Championships)?

  • It is an annual badminton tournament sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
  • The tournament offers the most ranking points, along with Summer Olympic Games.
  • This year, the tournament was held from 19 to 25 August at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland.
