Arctic temperature rise is worrying scientists!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

This was the first time in the history of the land north of the Arctic Circle that the temperature was at least 38 degrees Celsius. The World Meteorological Organization said the temperature belonged more in the Mediterranean than in the Arctic.

Siberia’s record-breaking temperatures showed that the Arctic was warming faster than the rest of the world. Experts fear that this could have caused huge wildfires.

Key facts!

  • Two recent analyses found that this year’s wildfire season was not a one-time phenomenon.
  • Instead, it was a pattern that may grow more common as the planet heats.
  • The first study investigates Siberian Arctic wildfires and warming.
  • As per researchers, rising temperatures have had “major” effects over 40 years.
  • Wildfires have raged throughout the year due to above-average temperatures.
  • The study’s lead author believes heat waves could dry plants.
  • Thus making them more flammable and likely to cause wildfires.
  • Researchers say Arctic wildfire emissions threaten world climate goals.
  • This rise in the amount of land burned each year shows that the Arctic is experiencing a change in fire patterns.
  • Experts also state that sudden changes in temperature can cause wildfires in the Arctic.
  • Another study found that the Arctic is getting warmer four times faster than the rest of the world.
  • To reduce Arctic fire seasons before the turn of the century, scientists recommend reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
