Bangladesh stun India, win maiden U-19 Cricket World Cup

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Today, Bangladesh won their maiden (first-ever) ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup, beating defending champions and favourites India.

Bangladesh won by 3 wickets. As rain interrupted the match towards the end, the DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) method was used to adjust the total.

What is the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method (DLS) method?

It is a mathematical formulation designed to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited-overs cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstances.

Key highlights!

  • Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl first.
  • India scored 177 runs for 10 wickets in 47.1 overs.
  • Bangladesh put in a brilliant performance and chased down the total (170 runs – revised due to the rain), winning the match.
  • India’s Yasashvi Jaiswal scored 88 runs while Bangladesh’s top scorer was Parvez Hossain Emon with 47 runs.
  • The Player of the Match was Bangladesh’s captain Akbar Ali.
  • They played the final at JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom, South Africa.
  • India won the semifinal against Pakistan while Bangladesh beat New Zealand to reach its first-ever ICC (International Cricket Council) U-19 Cricket World Cup final.
