BCCI to pay male and female cricketers equally!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

The Board Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) “pay equity policy” requires equal match pay for centrally contracted men’s and women’s players. Women’s Test matches now pay Rs 15 lakh, One Day Internationals (ODIs) Rs 6 lakh, and T20s Rs 3 lakh.

India is the second cricket nation to pay players equally. Roger Binny, BCCI president, calls it a “great step ahead” for women’s cricket and the game.

India now treats women’s cricket equally.

Key facts!

  • The BCCI wants a “new age of equality” with equal pay and match fees.
  • BCCI believes that match payments for male and female cricketers will be equalised in a new era of gender equality.
  • Former India captain Diana Edulji recalls that she and her colleagues had to pay out of their own pockets to play for the country.
  • Edulji now believes that the BCCI’s wage parity is a “Diwali present” for female cricketers and a reward for their on-field success.
  • She stated that the first season of the Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) will encourage more young women to play cricket.
  • It will inspire more women to play domestic cricket to enhance their reputations.
  • The former Women’s Cricket Team Captain also believes that the BCCI has made progress in recognising women cricketers and women’s cricket.
  • This will greatly assist the game and Indian players.
  • Edulji improved travel and accommodation amenities for existing players while on the BCCI Committee of Administrators.
  • They no longer had to share rooms in five-star hotels, business class travel became standard, and daily allowances were boosted to match the men’s squad.
  • She feels with the women’s Indian Premier League, female cricketers couldn’t ask for more.
