That’s how unexpected and marvelous the discovery of this blue tarantula was!
A Star Gets Its Name

The Quest for More Blues
Adventurous researchers, led by Narin Chomphuphuang—a real-life spider detective, ventured into the forests hoping to find more of these blue marvels. The quest was tough, kind of like looking for a hidden gem in a vast maze. But their determination led them to discover more about this spider’s secret home.

How the Spider Shimmers
The blue of Chilobrachys natanicharum isn’t from paint or clothing. It’s all about its skin. Tiny structures on its skin dance with light, creating the electrifying blue shimmer, a real magical sight!
A Worldwide Blue Mystery
Here’s a wonder to think about: How do tarantulas from different parts of the world all wear the same shade of blue? It’s a mysterious nature’s secret that researchers are still trying to understand.
Colorful Spider Talk
Much like a peacock displaying its feathers, our blue tarantula also has a way to “talk” using its colors. Whether it’s showing off to a potential partner or warning an intruder, this tarantula uses its shimmering legs to communicate.

DIY Activity: Create Your Own “Electric Blue Tarantula” Habitat
Objective: To help middle graders understand the natural habitat of the Electric Blue Tarantula and promote hands-on learning.
Materials:
- Clear plastic or glass container (preferably with a lid) – representing the tarantula’s habitat.
- Soil or potting mix – simulating the natural forest floor.
- Small plants, moss, or grass – to imitate the greenery of the Thai jungle.
- Small sticks, twigs, and leaves – replicating the natural environment.
- Blue craft paper or blue felt – to create your “tarantula”.
- Craft googly eyes.
- Glue.
- Scissors.
- Markers or colored pencils.
- A small flashlight or LED light – to demonstrate how the tarantula’s skin interacts with light.
Steps:
- Setting the Stage: Begin by layering the bottom of your container with soil or potting mix. This will act as the base of your tarantula’s home.
- Greening the Scene: Place small plants, moss, or grass into the soil, replicating the dense green environment of the Thai jungle.
- Adding Complexity: Scatter some small sticks, twigs, and leaves on the soil. This adds more depth and complexity to your tarantula’s habitat.
- Crafting Your Tarantula:
- Cut out a tarantula shape from the blue craft paper or felt.
- Glue the googly eyes onto the tarantula.
- Draw or color any additional details you’d like with markers or colored pencils.
- Placing Your Tarantula: Carefully place your crafted tarantula into the habitat. Find a spot where it seems to blend well, much like it would in its natural environment.
- Demonstrating the Shimmer: In a dimly lit room, use your flashlight or LED light to shine on your tarantula. Observe how the light interacts with the blue paper or felt. Discuss or contemplate how the real Electric Blue Tarantula’s skin might play with light to create its shimmering hue.
- Reflection & Discussion: Engage in a discussion or journaling activity about the tarantula’s habitat, the challenges it might face in its environment, and the wonders of its unique color.
Extensions:
- Research & Share: Encourage students to research more about the Electric Blue Tarantula. They can share fun facts, videos, or pictures in a following session.
- Story Time: Using their habitats, students can craft a short story or narrative about a day in the life of their Electric Blue Tarantula.
This DIY activity allows middle graders to get creative while connecting with the story of the Electric Blue Tarantula. It fosters hands-on learning and engages them in discussions about biodiversity, adaptation, and the wonders of nature.
