Discovering Ancient Egyptian Zodiac Signs!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Good to see you, diligent seeker of knowledge!, prepare yourselves for a wild journey through time. Once upon a time, some dust-busting detectives, called archaeologists, dug up a bunch of very, very old Egyptian paintings.

These paintings were hidden beneath a mountain of 2,000-year-old dirt! And where did they find this? In a temple, near a place called Luxor, where they’ve been brushing and scraping away for five years.

Starry Mysteries

  • Now, let’s unravel some juicy details. The ancient Egyptians had a favorite thing to doodle on their walls – the zodiac signs! These folks were head over heels in love with stars and planets, and they loved using them to jazz up their personal quiet spaces – tombs, actually!
  • Usually, you wouldn’t find these starry decorations in temples. Only in two special places, they’ve managed to survive all these years. Here’s a fun fact – it was the Greeks who introduced these zodiac doodles to Egypt, but the ones who first came up with them were the Babylonians.
  • And hold your breath – there’s one temple, the Temple of Esna, that’s basically a starry spectacular! It’s got all the zodiac signs, and even bonus artwork of Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars! Not to mention other twinkling stars and constellations.
  • But wait, there’s more! The Temple didn’t just showcase beautiful cosmic designs. Some were downright peculiar and funny! Ever heard of a snake sporting a ram’s head, or a bird that’s got a crocodile’s snout? How about flying snakes with wings? You could find them all in the Temple, making the place look like an ancient Egyptian version of a comic book!
  • The best part is, even though these artworks are as old as your great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents (a whole lot of greats!), they’re still in fantastic shape! The people restoring the Temple could even make out the original colors in the murals.
  • They’ve done a wonderful job of scrubbing off centuries of dirt without hurting the precious murals beneath. So, the next time you find doodling boring, remember – a simple doodle can turn into a magnificent piece of history!
