Baklava – Eat Street!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

A delightfully rich, buttery, and sugary delicacy, Turkish Baklava is also known as Fistikli Baklava or Pistachio Baklava. It is made with ground pistachios.

To a large extent, it is composed of phyllo (a type of pastry), butter, and chopped nuts like pistachios. Pistachios are sandwiched between two layers of dough in this baked treat.

After that, a syrup that consists of sugar, water, and lemon juice is poured on top of it.

Key facts!

  • Baklava is usually enjoyed as a mid-morning sweet snack with a cup of Turkish coffee.
  • You can also enjoy it as a mid-afternoon treat with a glass of tea.
  • Baklava is also served during Easter, Christmas and other holidays.
  • It is believed to have been created by Central Asian Turkic tribes.
  • History also shows that it was made in the kitchens of the Topkapi Palace during the Ottoman Empire.
  • In the late 19th century, small pastry shops were opened in Istanbul and other small towns, popularising this delicious dessert.
