Eid al-Adha!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Eid al-Adha (or Eid ul-Adha) is also termed the ‘Festival of the Sacrifice’. In India, it is also known as Bakrid (Bakra Eid) (Bakra Eid). It is the second of two Islamic festivals celebrated worldwide every year (the other being Eid al-Fitr).

Muslims around the world have been commemorating Eid al-Adha, commencing on 9 July. The celebrations will go on through today in India.

Eid al-Adha!

Why is this festival celebrated?

  • The holiday celebrates the prophet Ibrahim and his strong faith in God.
  • The story goes that God wanted Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience. Ibrahim could not understand why but he chose to believe in God and decided to make the sacrifice. But, before he could do it, God stopped him and provided a lamb to sacrifice instead.
  • Eid al-Adha also signifies the end of Haj. Haj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest city for Muslims.

How do people celebrate the Eid festival?

  • People offer morning prayers at the mosque.
  • An animal, like a goat or sheep, is often sacrificed and the feast is shared with relatives, neighbours and the poor.
  • People visit each other for feasts and children get gifts and new clothes. Families also donate to the poor and visit the graves of their loved ones.
