First elasmosaurus fossils found in Australia!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

In Australia, fossils of an elasmosaurus head and body were found for the first time. Three fossil hunters in Australia discovered a long-necked sea reptile.

What is Elasmosaurus?

Elasmosaurus is a group of marine reptiles that lived in North America during the late Cretaceous period, about 80.5 million years ago.

According to dinosaur experts, the elasmosaurus lived nearly 100 million years ago.

The Rock Chicks are a group of women archaeologists in Australia who found the fossils. Experts think they may have created history when they uncovered an elasmosaurus in Australia.

Key facts about this discovery!

  • Rock Chicks called Queensland Museum Network palaeontologists when they found the specimen.
  • The first known head and body of an Australian elasmosaur could lead to fresh information about the creature, a palaeontologist said.
  • This could be a major discovery for future research because experts have never found a body and head together.
  • Also, palaeontologists say that Plesiosaurs had two-thirds of a neck and that, after death, the head would often come off the body.
  • Because of this, it is very hard to find a fossil that shows both together.
  • A CT scan will help researchers learn more about these wonderful animals.

Fun facts about Plesiosaurs!

  • Over a hundred different kinds of plesiosaurs have been found in different parts of the world.
  • Some had short necks and big heads, while others had long necks and small heads.
  • Because of this, they didn’t have gills and had to come to the surface to breathe.
  • Most elasmosaurs had teeth that could only catch fish and not be used to chew or crush food.
  • Some fossils of plesiosaurs have stones that were still in the stomach area when they were made.
  • This shows that plesiosaurs were able to eat stones, which are called gastroliths.
  • Eromangasaurus australis is the only type of elasmosaur that was known to have lived in Australia.
