G20 leaders agree to step up effort to help Afghanistan

On 12 October, PM Modi attended an online summit with other G20 leaders (of the G20 countries). The G20 (or Group of Twenty) is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU). India is one of its members.

The meet was called the G20 Extraordinary Leaders’ Summit and the main topic of the meet was the issue of Afghanistan. This included discussing Afghanistan’s humanitarian needs, security, human rights and the fight against terrorism.

As per the discussions in the meeting, the G20 leaders agreed to work together to avoid a humanitarian disaster in Afghanistan.

What did the G20 leaders agree on?

The EU pledged (promised) a one-billion-euro (US$1.2-billion) aid package. This package aims to help Afghanis who are struggling right now as well as Afghanistan’s neighbours who are helping refugees. However, the money would go to international organisations working on the ground, rather than the Taliban government.

And the current G20 president, Italy, said that it is very important to maintain contact with the Taliban. The G20 leaders also emphasized the importance of respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms. This is especially for the rights of women and minorities.

A lot of international aid to Afghanistan has been blocked since the Taliban returned to power. Moreover, there is also a lot of unemployment and an increase in food prices. The Taliban also had a separate meeting with a US-EU delegation (group) in Qatar recently.
