Henley Passport Index 2019: How ‘strong’ is the Indian passport?

Recommended for Henley Passport Index 2019

According to the annual Henley Passport Index, the ‘strength’ of the Indian passport has become weaker between 2010 to 2019.

‘Strength’ here means the number of countries it has visa-free access to. ‘Visa-free access‘ also means being able to get a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authority when entering the destination.

  • India’s passport strength ranked 86th out of 187 countries in 2019, while in 2010 it was ranked 77th.
  • Between 2010 to 2019 only 8 countries were added to India’s visa-free access list.
  • As per the Henley Passport Index, currently, Indian passport holders have ‘visa-free access’ to travel to 58 countries.

What about other countries’ passport strength?

  • Singapore and Japan have the strongest passports. They have visa-free access to 189 destinations.
  • Iraq and Afghanistan passports are at the bottom of the table (They have visa-free access to 27 and 25 countries respectively).
  • Between 2010 to 2019, the United Arab Emirates has had the highest increase in ranking. Its ranking has moved up by 45 places to 20th position.
  • China ranks 74th in 2019, moving 14 places up from 2010.
  • Meanwhile, Russia’s position has gone down to 51st from 49th.
