Key facts!

  • Since its launch in 2008, the government had set a target to have nearly 10,000 centres by December 2023
  • Officials also state that the initiative has been successful for the following reasons:
    • Firstly, over a span of nearly five years, there are close to nine thousand centres all over India.
    • Secondly, during the 2021-2022 fiscal years, the centres have generated sales of more than eight hundred crores according to official estimates.
    • Thirdly, this has resulted in approximate cost savings of more than five thousand crores for patients as per government officials.
  • The Pharmaceutics and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) is in charge of administering the scheme.
  • The PMBJP has close to 1,800 different medications and more than two hundred fifty surgical tools.
  • They also provide a variety of food supplements and over-the-counter products.
