Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Central) has said that a new model of the Shinkansen (bullet train) in Japan, hit a record speed of 360 kph (kilometre per hour) in a test run.

Facts about the ‘Supreme’

  • It’s the fastest speed, a commercial model of bullet train has ever achieved.
  • However, the train is expected to run at 285 kph when it enters service.
  • The ‘Supreme’ or N700S train is lighter, uses less energy than current designs and has additional safety features in case of earthquakes.

It is set to begin operations ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Another company, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East), is currently testing the ‘Alfa-X’, which is also expected to hit the same speed.
