Night sky from India’s highest Astronomical Observatory!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

At the Indian Astronomical Observatory, one may get a view of the night sky from the observatory’s highest point.

The observatory is situated in close proximity to Leh. The observatory is one of the few in the world that offers an unobstructed view of space. This makes it so popular.

The Indian Astronomical Observatory is in Hanle, which is close to Leh in Ladakh. It is one of the highest places in the world where optical, infrared, and gamma-ray telescopes can be set up. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bangalore is in charge of it.

The Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) is situated in Hanle near Ladakh. IAO is one of the developing destinations for research combining optical and infrared subfields of astronomy.

India is gradually establishing itself as a leading location for astronomy research.

Key facts!

  • The study looked at how many clouds were out at night from a total of eight high-altitude observatories, three of which were in India.
  • They looked at the data from these observatories as well as the data from satellites.
  • Visitors to the Indian Astronomical Observatory can see the universe in a way that no one else can.
  • This is possible because the nights in the area are very clear and there isn’t much light pollution.
  • Also, the background concentration of aerosols and the extremely dry air give experts a very clear view.
  • Furthermore, the observatory is in a place where there are many clear nights each year.
  • Using the Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT), nighttime observations can be made at the IAO-Hanle all year long, even when the monsoons are happening.

This Indian Institute of Astrophysics presents the view behind the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve in Ladakh, India.
