PM Modi lays foundation stone of Centre for Buddhist Culture and Heritage

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepal PM Sher Bahadur Deuba laid the foundation stone for India International Centre for Buddhist Culture and Heritage in Lumbini. Lumbini is Lord Buddha’s birthplace.

  • Who is Lord Buddha?

Lord Gautama Buddha was an ascetic and spiritual teacher of South Asia. He is the founder of Buddhism and is revered as an Enlightened being by the Buddhists.

This is a step taken to strengthen the cultural ties between Nepal and India.

Building the Centre for Buddhist Culture

  • India is one of the main centres of Buddhism in the world. But it doesn’t have a centre or project in Lumbini. Modi’s government raised the issue with Nepal. With constant follow-up, The Lumbini Development Trust allocated a plot to the IBC to build a project.

  • After laying the foundation stone, the model of the centre was also unveiled by the two Prime Ministers.
  • The leaders paid their respects at the Marker Stone inside the temple premises.
  • The stone points to the exact birth spot of Lord Buddha.
  • They attended the pooja conducted as per Buddhist rituals.
  • They also lit lamps near the Ashoka Pillar that is located near the temple.
