Regulation of Online Gaming in India!

Recommended for Middle Grades

The Indian government has come up with a plan for a policy on online gaming. At the forefront, betting on the outcome of a game will not be allowed.

The proposed policy puts online gaming under Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. With this change, online games would be subject to these rules.

What is online gaming?

An online game is a game that is played in part or mostly over the Internet or another computer network.

What is Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021?

The rules establish a structure for how online publishers of news, current events, and customised audiovisual content need to control their content.

Key facts!

  • All online games will have to sign up with a group that regulates itself.
  • Under the proposed changes, the Ministry has to approve this group.
  • The basic idea is the same as the rules that the IT Rules put in place for digital news websites and streaming services.
  • Basically, you shouldn’t play any game where you can bet on the outcome.
  • Policymakers say that a self-regulatory group will decide what kinds of betting are illegal.
  • Any international betting sites will not be allowed to advertise on Indian websites.
  • Online gaming companies think that this framework will help the legal online gaming business.
  • In addition, the proposed policy makes sure there is more openness and safety for consumers.
  • People also expect online gaming sites to follow the laws of the country.
  • This includes any laws about gambling, betting, or the age when a person is old enough to sign a contract.
  • With these new laws for online gambling, the government will also put in place a structure for self-regulation.
  • This means that users will have to get verified, and online gaming companies will have to have a real address in India.
  • Self-regulatory bodies will be able to sign up with the ministry (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology).
  • As long as the games meet certain requirements and the intermediaries are members of the self-regulatory body.
  • These bodies will also handle complaints using a process for redressing grievances.
  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology wants to hear what people think about the proposed rule before January 17.
