Help! Plastic is Choking the Himalayan Mountains

Listen and learn about the Himalayas

Imagine the beautiful Himalayan mountains… now picture them covered in plastic bags, bottles, and wrappers! This sad reality is hurting this special place.

The Story of Too Much Plastic

Picture this: The mighty Himalayan peaks, gleaming with snow. But look closer…a plastic bottle peeks out from a rocky crevice, a candy wrapper snags on a branch. It wasn’t always like this.

  • The Growing Mountains of Trash: More people are calling the Himalayas home, and visitors from far away come to see their beauty. With them comes more stuff – food wrappers, water bottles, and other things made of plastic. It piles up, way more than the mountains can handle.

  • A Deadly Snack for Animals: Imagine a curious bird in the Himalayas, mistaking a bottle cap for a tasty bug. Or a fish in a Himalayan lake gulping down bits of plastic instead of food. These things make animals sick, and can even kill them.

  • Recycling Isn’t Working (Yet): We want our plastic to go to special places to be made into new things. But in the Himalayas, much of it gets lost – blown away by the wind, washed down rivers, ending up where it shouldn’t be.

The Rules Aren’t Helping Enough

India has rules to fight plastic trash, but the Himalayas are still drowning in it! Think about it – so much plastic enters the Himalayan environment, it’s more than all the candy you’ll ever eat in your whole life.

Some places tried making extra rules, but it’s tough. Also, trash rules are made for cities, not tall mountains. That’s why the Himalayas need special plans to get rid of plastic. Importantly, cleaning up this special place takes everyone working together.

We Can Make a Difference!

  • Mountain Helpers: Imagine the towns and villages nestled near the mighty Himalayas. They want to clean up the plastic mess but need help! Ask your parents if you can donate to groups helping them, or even research how to organize a clean-up drive in your own town.

  • Share Your Findings: To tackle the plastic problem in the Himalayas, we need to understand it better. Can you do a mini clean-up in your neighborhood or park and count how many plastic things you find? Share your results with your class or on social media to raise awareness!
  • Calling on Companies: All those companies that make plastic stuff? They need to clean up their act, especially in special places like the Himalayas. Encourage your parents to buy from companies that use less plastic or help recycle.

  • Visit the Himalayan Clean Up website to discover ways to help and learn more about the issue: https://www.thehimalayancleanup.in/

Can We Save the Himalayas?

YES! But we ALL have to change the way we use plastic. Imagine trash-free Himalayan mountains – wouldn’t that be amazing?

What Can YOU Do?

  • Say NO to plastic bags and straws whenever you can.
  • Recycle everything possible.
  • Help clean up your neighborhood and never litter, especially when visiting the Himalayan region.
