It may come as a surprise to you but the juicy tomato is considered to be the most popular fruit in the world. Yes, it is used as a vegetable but it is technically a fruit.

This fruit is an important part of many dishes.

  • The tomato is the edible, often red, berry of the plant Solanum Lycopersicum.
  • It originated in the western part of South America and Central America.
  • The word ‘tomato’ comes from the Spanish word ‘tomate‘, which in turn comes from the Nahuatl language word ‘tomatl’
  • The Aztecs in South America first used the tomato.
  • It was then, brought from there by the Spanish to Europe and then spread across the world.
  • There are around 7500 types of tomatoes and China produces the most tomatoes in the world.
  • Tomatoes can be used in many ways – in cooked dishes, salads, pizzas, sauces, juice and many more.
  • A tomato is 95% water, contains 4% carbohydrates and less than 1% each fat and protein.
  • Tomatoes also contain Vitamins C, A and K, which are suitable for health

However, if you have dogs, they can get sick if they eat large amounts of it, or chew the tomato plant.
