- The tomato is the edible, often red, berry of the plant Solanum Lycopersicum.
- It originated in the western part of South America and Central America.
- The word ‘tomato’ comes from the Spanish word ‘tomate‘, which in turn comes from the Nahuatl language word ‘tomatl’.
- The Aztecs in South America first used the tomato.
- It was then, brought from there by the Spanish to Europe and then spread across the world.
- There are around 7500 types of tomatoes and China produces the most tomatoes in the world.
- Tomatoes can be used in many ways – in cooked dishes, salads, pizzas, sauces, juice and many more.
- A tomato is 95% water, contains 4% carbohydrates and less than 1% each fat and protein.
- Tomatoes also contain Vitamins C, A and K, which are suitable for health
However, if you have dogs, they can get sick if they eat large amounts of it, or chew the tomato plant.
