Unrest in Sudan, Africa

After a long dictatorship, Sudan managed to overthrow it and form a new government in 2019. The government came about after a power-sharing agreement between the military and pro-democracy demonstrators. It was meant to be a temporary government, to restore democracy to the country.

However, now there is unrest in Sudan again. Reports say that there has been a military coup. And the military has arrested members of the government and other civilian leaders. Moreover, Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok is believed to be under house arrest by unidentified soldiers.

What is a military coup?

A military coup is when the army of a country forcefully takes over its own government.

There have been clashes between pro-democracy leaders and the military since they formed the government together in 2019.

The military has not made any official announcements as of now. If confirmed, this will be Sudan’s 8th coup since its independence from the British in 1956.

Unrest in Sudan

Reports say that the internet has been shut down. As of now, the airport at Khartoum, Sudan’s capital is closed and all international flights are suspended. Thousands of pro-democracy supporters have come out in the street to protest against the situation.

The UK, and the US, as well as the United Nations, European Union and Arab League have expressed deep concern for the situation.
