Guard – What’s in a word!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Do you know what the word ‘guard’ means?

As a verb, it means to keep an eye on something to protect it or keep it under control. When the same word is used as a noun, it means someone who keeps an eye on something or someone, like a soldier.

Key facts!

  • Guard comes from the Middle French word garde which means ‘guardian, warden, watching.
  • The word garde itself is derived from an Old French word garder which means ‘to keep, maintain, preserve, protect’.
  • The word ‘guard’ came to be used to mean ‘keeping, custody’ (like a bodyguard does) from early the 1500s.
  • Eventually, today, the word has come to denote many things – a football position, a piece of armour, and even a guardrail used on railway tracks.
  • Old French was the language spoken in Northern France from the 8th century to the 14th century.
  • It had many dialects (similar languages with slight differences).
  • Today, French is an official language in 29 countries across multiple continents and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
