Which cheese wins the World Cheese Awards 2022?

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

At the World Cheese Awards, judges sniff and bite their way through nearly hour thousand cheeses.

The winner this year is cheese from Switzerland, “Le Gruyère AOP surchoix”. The judges at the contest had to rate cheeses based on how they looked, smelled, tasted, and felt in the mouth.

The best ones got gold, silver, or bronze, and each table of judges chose one as a “super gold.”

Key facts!

  • Nearly 250 judges from all over the world sniffed, poked, and chewed their way through tables full of cheese.
  • They were to decide which one should win the World Cheese Awards in 2022.
  • Around the centre was a smelly, almost overpowering mix of ready-to-sell dairy products and friendly competition.
  • After the initial rounds, the count of cheese selection was cut down to 98 “super gold” winners.
  • Thereafter to 16, and from the sixteen a gruyère from Switzerland was chosen as this year’s winner.
  • The Swiss companies Vorderfultigen and Gourmino entered a cheese called Le Gruyère AOP surchoix.
  • The judges said it was a “really refined, hand-crafted cheese.”
  • It melted on the tongue and had hints of herbs, fruits, and leather.
  • The judges stated, “This cheese has a lot of flavour and fragrance.”
  • Gruyère is a hard cheese made from cow’s milk that has not been pasteurised and has been aged.
  • It kind of falls apart.
  • John Farrand, the managing director of the Guild of Fine Food, which put on the 34th annual event with help from the Welsh government, said that a win can make a small artisan cheese maker famous.

“Great Big Story” on YouTube tells the story of how Alexandre Murith’s family has been making Gruyère cheese in the Swiss Alps for hundreds of years.
