Racism: A threat to Mankind

The death of George Floyd in May 2020 by a Minneapolis police officer had ignited a long simmering anger over racism with eruption of demonstrators hitting the streets of all major cities of the United States. Since then, racism has once again raised several key issues and ill-practices which are prevailing in the world today. It has also raised questions on the working of several political parties and multi-national corporations (especially in the beauty and entertainment industry).

As per the latest survey of Zion, global sales of skin lightening products are expected to reach $8.9 billion in 2024. However, in the wake of the global protest against racism, many of the global giants have committed to no longer sell products that mention “Skin Whitening”. Interestingly, the products will still be available under different names, using euphemisms like glowing, radiant, bright or clear.

On the other hand, with the onset of “Black Lives Matter” movement in the United States, the entertainment industry sent out a flurry of statements supporting the Black Lives Matter movement’s fight against police brutality and systemic racism. The companies promised donations to anti-racist nonprofits and declared their commitment to diversity. However as per the survey of Los Angeles times, there is still a long way to go for Hollywood to achieve the racial equality.

The global politics have also been changing and have been shaped by the sensitive world’s environment for black lives. For instance, in the upcoming US elections in November 2020, both major parties, Democrats and Republicans have been showcasing their continuous support and efforts to promote racial equality.

All in all, though it seems that the global economy has come unitedly against racial biasness and is taking steps to create the awareness, it is still early to predict its impact on global stage and its implementation on grass root level.
