Catch the brightest Super Pink Moon on 7 April!

Recommended for Foundational Grades

We read about the Pink Moon on 19 April last year. This year, the Pink Moon will be visible on 8 April.

It is also called the Pink supermoon, Super Pink Moon or the Paschal Moon.

A supermoon happens when a full Moon comes closest to Earth. During a supermoon, the Moon appears 14% bigger and 30% brighter than it usually does.

  • This is called the ‘pink’ Moon by Native Americans who named it after one of the wild ground phlox, a spring flower that blooms in America at this time of the year.

  • However, the Moon doesn’t actually look pink – it looks more red or orange because of dust and smoke in the air.
  • It also has other names such as Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Fish Moon, and Hare Moon.

When can you see it?

For people living in India, it will be visible from the night of 7 April but its best view will be at 8.05 am on 8 April 2020.

The full Moon in May is called Full Flower Moon and it will be visible on 7 May.
