Amrita Pritam: Indian Poet

Daring and Fearless!

Amrita Pritam, the teenage poet who, in her best-known poem, ‘Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu,’ summoned Waris Shah with emotion. She was one of India’s most prominent female authors of the twentieth century. As a Punjabi and Hindi-language poet, Pritam was a daring and fearless woman, unlike the more timid ladies of her time.

Early Life of Amrita Pritam!

Amrita was born on August 31, 1919, in Punjab. She was the only child of Kartar Singh and Raj Bibi, both Sikhs. Her father was a teacher at a school and a poet, so he was both. She was raised in a religious family and learned to write from her father.

Her orthodox grandmother kept separate sets of utensils for Hindus and Muslims so that they could be served the same things. She was a critical thinker from a young age. After her mother passed away, she moved to Lahore with her father.

‘Amrit Lehran’ (Immortal Waves) was her first collection of poems when she was just 16. Around the same period, she married and took the surname “Pritam” to reflect her new marital status.

Partition and Amrita Pritam!

The horrors of the partition as a young woman devastated her soul and rocked her to the core, leaving her scarred for life. She wrote the poem ‘Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu’ shortly after the traumatic event, and it captures the hopelessness, terror, and sadness felt by everyone who watched the partition.

Pinjar, which she wrote as a response to the oppression felt by women during the partition period, was also inspired by her own experiences. Known as the most influential Punjabi poet of the 20th century, her beautiful poetry and poetry elevated her to a prominent position in the Punjabi literary world. Several Indian and international languages have published translations of her works.

More than 100 volumes, including poetry collections, fiction, biography and essays were published by the prolific author.
