National Maritime Day!

On April 5, 1919, the Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd.’s first steamship, the SS Loyalty, began its journey from India to the United Kingdom. India’s National Maritime Day is celebrated on April 5th every year.

National Maritime Day!

  • NMD was first celebrated on 5 April 1964.
  • The Varuna Award is given on this day. It honours people for their contribution to the Indian maritime sector. The award consists of a statue of Lord Varuna (the god of water and rain) and a citation.
  • ‘NMD Award of Excellence’ is also given to recognise and honour exceptional and lifetime achievements at the senior functional level in the maritime industry.

What are some interesting notes on India’s maritime industry?

  • India has a coastline of 7517 km from East to West. Transport by water is one of the most common and cheapest ways to get around. This is because it is very easy and cheap to use.
  • There has been a steady rise in the Indian maritime industry over the years. It is very important to the world’s economy because 90% of the world’s trade is done by sea.
  • India has 12 major ports and 200 small and medium-sized ports that have been approved by the government.
