Centre bans onion exports, imposes stock limits as onion price continues to rise

Recommended for Middle Grades

As the price for onions continues to rise in the market, the government has banned all onion exports until further notice.

Key facts!

  • It has also imposed limits on the amount of stock (of onions) that can be held, to prevent hoarding.
  • All the states have been asked to take strict measures to prevent hoarding by traders, including organising raids.
  • Retail traders can stock up to 100 quintals (10,000 kg) and wholesale traders can stock up to 500 quintals (50,000 kg).
  • In metro cities, the retail price of onions shot up to as much as ₹60 per kg. At one point, it even touched ₹80 per kg.
  • However, the government had a central buffer of 56,700 metric tonnes of onions (in stock).
  • This buffer stock is maintained through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED).
  • It is already being used to supply onions to Delhi, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh at regulated rates.

Other states have also been asked to indicate their requirement to NAFED so that supplies can be sent.
