Onion prices rise all over the country

Recommended for Middle Grades

Vegetables like onions and potatoes are an important part of our daily food. So, a sudden increase in their prices can affect us all.

Key facts!

Onion prices are on the rise again, all over the country. They’ve touched a record high of ₹4500 per quintal (100 kg), the steepest since December 2017.

  • Even though Mother Dairy’s Safal stores in the National Capital Region are selling onions at ₹23.90/kg, the retail price of onions in Delhi is up at ₹56/kg.
  • The onion prices are unchanged in Mumbai at ₹60/kg but are increasing in cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru etc.

This rise in prices is due to multiple reasons.

  • The heavy and unseasonal rainfall in places like Karnataka has led to damage to some of the crops.
  • Other places like Lasalgaon and Pune in Maharashtra are not able to send out the onions to other states because of the rains affecting the transport.

This shortage is expected to continue until the new crop from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka come into the market around mid-November. That’s when the prices are expected to stabilize.
