Indian-American scientist to lead US National Science Foundation

The US President Donald Trump has chosen Indian-American computer scientist Dr Sethuraman Panchanathan to lead the United States’ prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF).
Dr Panchanathan will take over from the current director, France Cordova, in 2020.
- He is currently the Executive Vice President and the Chief Research and Innovation Officer at the Arizona State University (ASU).
- Dr Panchanathan is also the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).
- Dr Panchanathan is an alumnus of the University of Madras as well as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.
- He also completed his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada in 1989.
What is the National Science Foundation (NSF)?
- It is a United States government agency that supports fundamental research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering.
- The NSF’s director and deputy director are appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the US Senate.
