COVID-19 cure – 14-year-old Indian-American girl wins prize

Scientists around the world are working very hard to find the COVID-19 cure.
Anika Chebrolu, a 14-year-old Indian-American girl from Texas, US could help us find it. She has just won the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge. She got it for her work on a potential treatment for COVID-19 cure.
The 3M Young Scientist Challenge is a youth science and engineering competition for middle school students in the US. It is awarded by media companies, Discovery Education and 3M. The winner gets US$25,000 and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist“.
Anika has been awarded this for developing a molecule that can bind (stick) to a certain protein of the COVID-19 virus. This binding can stop the virus from working.
Earlier, before the COVID-19 crisis, Anika was working on ways to fight the seasonal flu. However, she changed her plans after the pandemic happened.
Anika said that her grandfather inspired her interest in science. She hopes to be a medical researcher and professor one day. During her free time, Anika trains for the Indian classical dance, Bharatanatyam, which she has been practising for eight years.
