Indian-American soil scientist Dr. Rattan Lal wins World Food Prize 2020

Indian-American soil scientist Dr. Rattan Lal has been named as this year’s recipient of the World Food Prize.
He won the award for developing and popularising the method of increasing food production by enriching the soil. Soil development is also done in a way that conserves natural resources. It also decreases the bad effects of climate change.
His methodology has helped around 500 million small farmers across the world. This has led to an increase in global food production.
Who is Dr. Rattan Lal?
He was born in 1944 in Karyal in West Punjab (currently in Pakistan). His family moved to Haryana after independence.
He studied at Punjab Agricultural University and at Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi. After that, he went on to study further at Ohio State University, US.
Dr. Lal is currently the professor of soil science at Ohio State University.
What is the World Food Prize?
The World Food Prize is the world‘s top prize in the field of agriculture (similar to a Nobel Prize).
It was established by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Norman Borlaug in 1986.
Each year, a recipient is awarded US$250,000 for improving the quality and availability of food.
