Inspirational stories: Wheelchair athlete climbs up Hong Kong tower

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Howdy, my curious friend! Let us tell you about an amazing person named Lai Chi-wai. He’s 37 years old and lives in Hong Kong. Now, a paraplegic is someone whose legs and lower body are paralyzed, so they use a wheelchair to move around.

Heroic Heights: Unstoppable!

  • Lai Chi-wai is a paraplegic, but that doesn’t stop him from doing incredible things! Last week, he did something truly extraordinary. With his wheelchair, he climbed up a super tall building called Nina Tower in Hong Kong! Wow!
  • Can you believe it took him more than 10 hours to pull himself up the tower? That’s a very long time, but he didn’t give up! His determination and strength are truly inspiring.
  • You know what makes this even more special? He did this not just for himself, but to help other disabled people like him. Lai Chi-wai wanted to raise money, and guess what? He collected a huge amount, over US$670,000! That’s a lot of money to help others in need.
  • Before the accident, Lai Chi-wai was a famous rock climber. He was the champion of Asia four times! But then, about 10 years ago, he had an accident, and he couldn’t use his legs anymore. It was a tough time for him, but you know what? He didn’t let that stop him from pursuing his passion.
  • He figured out a way to climb again by attaching his wheelchair to a pulley system. That’s like being a superhero! He used his arms and strength to pull himself up, just like a rock climber.
  • Even though he couldn’t reach the very top of the skyscraper this time, he didn’t feel sad or disappointed. Safety is the most important thing, after all. But he has a big dream! He hopes that his story will inspire other disabled people, just like him, to believe in themselves and never give up.
  • Isn’t that cool? Lai Chi-wai is a true inspiration to all of us. He shows us that no matter what challenges we face in life, we can find a way to overcome them. He’s like a real-life superhero, right?
  • So, the next time you feel down or face a tough situation, remember Lai Chi-wai’s story. It’s a reminder that with determination and a positive attitude, we can achieve incredible things.
  • And you know what, my little friend? We can also help others along the way, just like Lai Chi-wai did. It’s like spreading kindness and love in the world!
  • We hope this story made you smile and feel inspired. Life may throw obstacles at us, but we can always find the strength within ourselves to keep going and make a difference in the world. You’re never too small to do big things!
