ISRO-NASA’s Earth-observing satellite!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

ISRO and NASA have completed the construction of a satellite. Shipping to India can begin soon for the forthcoming launch. The satellite weighs more than two thousand five hundred kilogrammes.

What is Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)?

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is the government of India’s first space agency. It is based in Bengaluru.

What is NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)?

NASA is a government agency in the United States that works on science and technology for air and space.

What is an Earth Observation (EO) Satellite?

A satellite made to look at Earth from space is called an Earth observation (EO) satellite.

The earth-observation satellite will assist with a more in-depth study of the land and ice surfaces of Earth.

The satellite is “a powerful illustration of the capacity of radar as a science tool,” as stated by officials. In addition, it will help experts study Earth’s dynamic land and ice surfaces in greater detail than before.

Also, this marks an important milestone in a collective journey to gain a deeper understanding of planet Earth. Furthermore in finding the ways in which our climate is constantly evolving.

Important Details

  • The reflector antenna that will be used by the satellite to collect radar data will have a diameter of almost 12 metres.
  • It will make use of a method of signal processing to monitor changes in the land and ice surfaces of the Earth that are as small as fractions of an inch.
  • Researchers will be able to use the satellite to detect slow-moving variations of a land surface.
  • This could further provide an early warning sign of seismic activity, landslides, and volcanic eruptions.
  • The collection of data on these sorts of movements could also assist communities in their preparation for natural disasters like the Joshimath land subsidence.
  • It will also be possible to gain a better understanding of the rate and impacts of climate change.
  • This includes the rise in sea level if measurements of melting sea ice and ice sheets are taken.
  • The primary mission of the satellite will last for three years, and during that time it will observe nearly every part of the planet once every 12 days.
  • It will carry out these observations during the day, at night, and in any kind of weather.
