NASA sends hello messages to Vikram lander on the Moon

Recommended for Exploration

NASA*  is sending radio signals to Vikram lander in a bid to communicate with it.

  • The US space agency is helping ISRO’s efforts to secure a communication link with the lander.
  • NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is also revolving around the Moon.
  • It is scheduled to pass over the Vikram landing site on 17  September.
  • They have reported that NASA will share imagery of the area around the targeted region to support analysis by ISRO.
  • Vikram was carrying a NASA scientific instrument (‘Laser Retro Reflector‘)  that reflects laser beams from Earth.
  • It was also sent with the Israeli lunar mission Beresheet which crashed in April this year.

All possible efforts to make contact with Vikram are being made while it still has a mission life of 1 lunar day/14 earth days.

  • ISRO is trying to establish the link using the Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu near Bengaluru.
  • They have not yet released any images of Vikram’s landing site.
